Facilities

Ballast-Tech NIVAs have 5 years of experience with R&D and procedures for testing treatment technologies for ballast water. The company has all the necessary equipment to conduct tests for

  • laboratory testing
  • small-scale testing
  • and full scale testing
  • either at the test facility at Solbergstrand outside Oslo, or in laboratory facilities in Oslo. The facilities include:

    1. Large-scale growing capacity for added organisms (bacteria, algae and zooplankton),a harvesting system for naturally occurring algae and zooplankton
    2. Access to accredited analytical services in chemistry and biology, and test systems for eco-toxicological tests
    3. Comprehensive generic project plan (PP) and Quality Assurance plan (QAPP) conforming to IMO requirements
    4. Freshwater, brackish and seawater available, by using seawater intakes from different depths plus groundwater
    5. Flexible system for pumping water in ballasting and deballasting operations during pilot and full scale tests. A challenge water is made with chemical and biological additives in any volum up to 550 m3 in a supply tank, with test water and control water being removed in series from this tank.
    6. Excellent opportunities for developing and testing the technology on a small scale, something which is normally necessary prior to full-scale testing.

Full scale land based testing can be carried out in the course of a period of three to four months. Follow-up work in the form of data processing and reporting are completed within the following two months.

Shipboard testing can follow any mutual agreement. We strongly recommend that we are consulted at an early stage to give advise on important logistical and technical issues that are key necessities for easy and successfull shipboard testing.

Pilot or laboratory scale testing can be carried out in any time frame.
